This limestone low-relief portrays Victor Hugo, the celebrated French writer, poet, novelist, and political thinker whose influence profoundly shaped the history of the 19th century.

The artwork bears the inscription “Victor Hugo 1802–1885” and is signed “C. Capellaro.”

Charles-Romain-Joseph Capellaro, an Italian-born sculptor and pupil of David d’Angers, created numerous busts and statues that are now preserved in museums throughout France. This historical low-relief pays tribute to both Hugo’s enduring legacy and Capellaro’s distinguished artistic career.

The piece is mounted on a limestone base, crafted from material recovered during the cleaning of the petrification racks, adding an authentic connection to the unique craftsmanship of the Fontaines Pétrifiantes de Saint-Nectaire.
