“Boxing is a combat sport where two bodies face each other. But the body is a particular phase of the fight, the moment when the bodies touch to recover, to regain their senses. What interests me are the snapshots, like flashes that crackle, crossing the ropes to freeze the actors on the ring. And suddenly, there is a different lighting. For a brief instant, there is no violence. The bodies touch, the gloves caress; one seems to weep on the other’s shoulder. Are they kissing? And then, when the electrified light fades, the context returns in a difficult separation, bodies still entwined. Ambiguous and equivocal, these moments are treated as if watching a film, frame by frame, each with its own title: ‘The Killer’s Kiss,’ ‘The Tenderness of the Accursed.’”
