The ‘Merchant of Love’ depicts a mythological scene in which a female figure sells small winged Cupids, symbols of love, desire, or the illusion of emotions.
The concept of capturing and selling love in a market plays on irony and critiques human relationships, suggesting that love can be manipulated or commercialized. This theme also fits within an artistic tradition where Antiquity is revisited with refinement and elegance.
This limestone low-relief is inspired by the eponymous fresco from the Villa Arianna, uncovered during archaeological excavations of the ancient city of Stabies (Stabiae), now Castellammare di Stabia. Preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the original work was among the most reproduced pieces during the Neoclassical and Rococo periods.
