This calcite low-relief is an interpretation of the iconic equestrian statue of Vercingetorix in bronze, created by Auguste Bartholdi in 1903 and installed in Place de Jaude in Clermont-Ferrand.

An emblematic figure of Gaulish history, Vercingetorix is best known for his leadership and heroic resistance against the invasion of Julius Caesar in the 1st century BC. His name has become synonymous with resistance against foreign domination, symbolizing the pride, courage, and dignity of the Gaulish people in the history of France.

The matrix used to create this calcite low-relief was engraved in 1887 by Charles-Frédéric Becker, a master engraver of hardstones. Becker based his work on Bartholdi’s original 1869 model, which is now preserved in the Bartholdi Museum in Colmar.
