This limestone bas-relief, signed with the initials of Jean Fonvieille, immerses the viewer in the mysterious silence of the ocean depths. Titled “Wreck”, the work depicts the remnants of a sunken ship: scattered planks, each a fragment of a past swallowed by the sea.

Every detail and texture arises from a patient, meticulous process. Day by day, the Master Craftsman of Petrification guided the limestone deposition, allowing the crystals to form and gradually reveal the subtle reliefs of this underwater scene. The result is a piece that is both poetic and unique, where the material itself narrates the passage of time as much as it evokes the secrets of the ocean.

Jean Fonvieille created three low-relief for the Fontaines Pétrifiantes: Scale games, Underwater and Wreck.

“Those creations result from a special technique: the negative cast was made directly out of clay, then plaster was poured into that cast. After removing the clay, the artist obtained a unique positive matrix. That process allows active research on contrasting matters. »
