Created using the encrustation on mould technique from a 1907 copper matrix, this calcite low-relief depicts the Temple of Mercury at the summit of the Puy de Dôme.
This remarkable Gallo-Roman sanctuary was built during the 2nd century AD, and archaeological excavations carried out in 1875 and again in the early 20th century uncovered its impressive ruins.
Following the inauguration of the rack railway in 1907, numerous aristocrats travelled to the summit of the Puy de Dôme to admire the recently excavated remains of the temple. This artwork pays tribute to one of Auvergne’s most iconic archaeological landmarks, combining historical significance with the timeless beauty of calcite.
