This nymph is inspired by the low-reliefs of the Fontaine des Innocents, created by Jean Goujon based on drawings by Pierre Lescot in 1549, to mark the arrival of Henry II in Paris. Located on today’s Place Joachim du Bellay, the fountain has been classified as a historic monument since 1862.
Jean Goujon sculpted light and graceful reliefs, evoking water nymphs, following the ancient tradition of nymphaea and drawing inspiration from the marine triumphs depicted on antique sarcophagi. To protect them from water runoff, these masterpieces are now preserved at the Louvre Museum.
This limestone low-relief is mounted on a limestone base at the back, providing stability and elegance for display or collection purposes.
